I started a new photographic project and I’d like to share it with you. The series is called “Photographic Portraits Behind The Canvas”.
Using a frame and elastic fabric I wanted to create photography that seemed like painted canvas. Once again, I tried to minimize the use of Photoshop. The result is truly amazing. The models look like paintings from the nineteenth century! I did some research and I think that this can be considered as a new technique in the world of photography. The series is still on process.
What inspired you to do the Portraits Behind The Canvas?

I wanted to recreate the atmospheres of some horrific and surreal drawings and paintings that always have stimulated my imagination since I was a kid studying Art (for example: some dreamy drawings by Alfred Kubin or some great paintings by Böcklin). Painting "Medusa" by Böcklin is in the same time scary and beautiful. I love it.

How did you do that work?

As for the rest of my works, I wanted to avoid using editing programs. For this reason, I was looking for a technique that could give me the desired effect without, however, be too artificial.
In my researches I couldn't find any similar project. So I devised my own technique which I assume has never previously adopted in photography.
I used an elastic fabric stretched over an old vintage frame and I asked the models to push themselves beyond the frame. After studying the right lighting, the result was surprising: the images seemed to come to life on canvas.

What reaction do you expect from the audience?

I hope that this project can convey those feelings that have inspired me: a mixture of astonishment and fascination. The feelings that sometimes you experience when you wake up after a strange dream.

Do you think the photos can scare someone this halloween?

Yep, I hope so! Perhaps this may be the halloween costume for this 2014. Certainly it would be fun to see the people around the city with their head stuck in an ancient frame. Uncomfortable but definitely original.
